Best Actress 2013: Carey Mulligan, The Great Gatsby

Besides Sandra Bullock's Gravity, The Great Gatsby's Carey Mulligan is another major Best Actress holdover from 2012.  Baz Lurhman's adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel is the movie nobody asked for with the expensive price tag.  The promo shots, trailers, and postponed release dates have instilled little reason to rethink this stance.  If Luhrman is trying to convince studios to not hire him for big extravaganzas and discourage studios from investing in anything other than action sequels, he's certainly doing a stupendous job!

Anyhow, Mulligan made an exceptional debut with An Education four years ago now and went on to gradually make good on her promise by working on choice projects (Drive), signing on with top directors (Inside Llewyn Davis), and turning out career-best performances (Shame).  She has made what might be perceived as questionable choices (including Gatsby and the Wall Street sequel), which is unfortunate, but it's not like she is trying to sabotage her filmography.  Mulligan auditioned for Lisbeth Salander in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo sequel two years ago, but was passed over for Rooney Mara.  Perhaps, she would have been miscast, but I can't help but imagine what she might have done with that role.  Perhaps not as much as Mara, but I'm stubborn.

Gatsby's adaptation will be brought to you by Luhrmann and his screenwriting right-hand man Craig Pearce.  Composer Craig Armstrong won a Golden Globe for Rouge!  Cinematographer Simon Duggan has a questionable CV comprised mostly of empty action films.  Like with Rouge! and Australia, Luhrman's wife Catherine Martin worked on art direction and costumes (she has two Academy Awards to her name).  Martin coproduced along with her husband and a host of others.  There are enough editors to choke a horse, but it's a Luhrman film, so what do you expect?  Those gazillions of bytes of footage aren't going to chop themselves.  The probably snoozer of a film that has already been a boring movie decades ago stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Jason Clarke and Joel Edgerton (both from Zero Dark Thirty), Isla Fisher, and, if you're worried about whether or not you'll fall asleep, there's Tobey Maguire as the Human Sleeping Pill.  The movie filmed the latter half of 2011 in New South Wales and will release in the US on the 10th of May.  Set your alarm clocks.

Oscars 2013: Jennifer Lawrence takes home Best Actress for 'Silver Linings Playbook'

Jennifer Lawrence continued her trend of awesome acceptance speeches at the 85th Academy Awards when she accepted her must-deserved Best Actress award for "Silver Linings Playbook."
"Thank you. You guys are standing up because you feel bad that I fell but thank you," she said, making a reference to the fact that she tripped and fell walking up the stairs to the stage. Yes, she made even that classy.
Lawrence had many people to thank for her win, but her best speech moment came when she honored the other women in film in 2012. "Thank you to the women this year. You were so magnificent and so inspiring, and not just the women in my category," she said.
Also nominated for Best Actress were youngest-ever nominee Quvenzhane Wallis, oldest-ever nominee Emmanuelle Riva, Jessica Chastain and Naomi Watts. This is Lawrence's second Oscar nomination for Best Actress and first win.

Keira Knightley

Keira Christina Knightley was born in the South London suburb of Richmond on March 26th 1985. She is the daughter of actor Will Knightleyand actress turned playwright Sharman Macdonald. An older brother, Caleb Knightley, was born in 1979. Brought up immersed in the acting profession from both sides - writing and performing - it is little wonder that the young Keira asked for her own agent at the age of three. She was granted one at the age of six and performed in her first TV role as "Little Girl" in "Screen One: Royal Celebration (#5.4)" (1993), aged seven. It was discovered at an early age that Keira had severe difficulties in reading and writing. She was not officially dyslexic as she never sat the formal tests required of the British Dyslexia Association. Instead, she worked incredibly hard, encouraged by her family, until the problem had been overcome by her early teens.

Jessica Alba

Born in Pomona, California, on April 28, 1981, Jessica Alba and her family moved to Biloxi, Mississippi, when she was an infant. Three years later, her Air Force father brought the family back to California, then to Del Rio, Texas, before finally settling in Southern California when Jessica was nine. In love with the idea of becoming an actress from the age of five, she was 12 before she took her first acting class. Nine months later, she was signed by an agent. A gifted young actress, Jessica has already played a variety of roles ranging from light comedy to gritty drama since beginning her career. She made her feature film debut in 1993 in Hollywood Pictures' comedy Camp Nowhere(1994). Originally hired for two weeks, she got her break when an actress in a principal role suddenly dropped out. Jessica cheerfully admits it wasn't her prodigious talent or charm that inspired the director to tap her to take over the part - it was her hair, which matched the original performer's. The two-week job stretched to two months, and Jessica ended the film with an impressive first credit. Two national TV commercials for Nintendo and J.C. Penney quickly followed before Jessica was featured in several independent films. She branched out into TV in 1994 with a recurring role in Nickelodeon's popular comedy series "The Secret World of Alex Mack" (1994). She played an insufferable young snob, devoted to making life miserable for the the title character, played by Larisa Oleynik. That same year, she won the role of "Maya" in "Flipper" (1995) and filmed the pilot for the series. She spent 1995 shooting the first season's episodes in Australia. An avid swimmer and PADI-certified scuba diver, Jessica was delighted to be doing a show that allowed her to play with dolphins. The show's success guaranteed it a second season, which she also starred in. Her involvement in the show lasted from 1995 to 1997. Since the show ended, she has appeared in a number of TV shows and films. In 1996, she appeared in Venus Rising (1995) as "Young Eve". The next year, she appeared on the "The Dini Petty Show" (1989), a Canadian talk show, and spoke about her role in "Flipper" (1995) and her general acting career. She began working on P.U.N.K.S. (1999) (V), featuring Randy Quaid, in 1998. In early 1998, she appeared in "Brooklyn South" (1997) as "Melissa". That same year, she was in two episodes of "Beverly Hills" (1990) as "Leanne" and in two episodes of "La croisière s'amuse, nouvelle vague" (1998). She appeared in "Teen Magazine" in 1995 and various European magazines in the following several years. More importantly, she was featured in the February 1999 issue of "Vanity Fair" magazine. She also had major roles in two movies that year: Collège attitude (1999) and La main qui tue (1999). In 2000, she had roles inParanoïd (2000/I) and starred in the sci-fi TV series "Dark Angel" (2000).

Penélope Cruz

Known outside her native country as the "Spanish enchantress", Penélope Cruz Sánchez was born in Madrid to Eduardo (a retailer) and Encarna (a hairdresser). As a toddler, she was already a compulsive performer, re-enacting TV commercials for her family's amusement, but she decided to focus her energies on dance. After studying classical ballet for nine years at Spain's National Conservatory, she continued her training under a series of prominent dancers. At 15, however, she heeded her true calling when she bested more than 300 other girls at a talent agency audition. The resulting contract landed her several roles in Spanish TV shows and music videos, which in turn paved the way for a career on the big screen. Cruz made her movie debut in El laberinto griego (1993) (The Greek Labyrinth), then appeared briefly in the Timothy Daltonthriller "Framed" (1992). Her third film was the Oscar-winning Belle époque (1992), in which she played one of four sisters vying for the love of a handsome army deserter. The film also garnered several Goyas, the Spanish equivalent of the Academy Awards. Her resume continued to grow by three or four films each year, and soon Cruz was a leading lady of Spanish cinema. En chair et en os (1997) (Live Flesh) offered her the chance to work with renowned Spanish director Pedro Almodóvar (who would later be her ticket to international fame), and the same year she was the lead actress in the thriller/drama/mystery/sci-fi film Ouvre les yeux (1997), a huge hit in Spain that earned eight Goyas (though none for Cruz). Her luck finally changed in 1998, when the movie-industry comedy La fille de tes rêves (1998) won her a Best Actress Goya. Cruz made a few more forays into English-language film, but her first big international hit was Almodóvar's Tout sur ma mère (1999), in which she played an unchaste but well-meaning nun. As the film was showered with awards and accolades, Cruz suddenly found herself in demand on both sides of the Atlantic. Her next big project was Woman on top - Amour, piments et bossa nova (2000), an American comedy about a chef with bewitching culinary skills and a severe case of motion sickness. While in the US, she also signed up to star opposite Johnny Depp in the drug-trafficking drama Blow (2001) and opposite Matt Damon in Billy Bob Thornton's De si jolis chevaux (2000). Cruz says she's wary of being typecast as a beautiful young damsel, but it's hard to imagine disguising her wide-eyed charms and generous nature. Fortunately, with Cameron Crowe'sVanilla Sky (2001) (a remake of Ouvre les yeux (1997)) and a John Madden collaboration looming in her future, Damsel Penelope isn't likely to disappear just yet.

Christina Aguilera's New Look At 'The Voice' Screening Is Toned Down, Gorgeous

Christina Aguilera is a woman who undergoes many transformations. There was wholesome novice Christina, "Dirrty" Christina, vintage-inspired Christina and then a whole slew of "The Voice" Christina iterations we can't really categorize.
But now it looks like she's found a sweet spot in her makeover rotation: toned-down, glam Christina. "Makeover" may not be the right word for this one actually; it's more of a makeunder. The wavy blonde locks, subtle makeup and relatively demure LBD she rocked at "The Voice" season 4 screening on Wednesday night resulted in a much more natural look for the singer.
We haven't been huge fans of the 32-year-old's recent unconventionally-styled pink hair or her distracting ensembles, so we're glad to see Christina go back to basics. Doesn't she look great?

Nicki Minaj shares a crazy sneak peek at her upcoming David LaChapelle-shot fragrance campaign

Nicki Minaj and photographer David LaChapelle are working together once again. The duo—who first caught our eye with a colourful collaboration for M.A.C Viva Glam—are now at work on Minaj’s newest fragrance campaign. While few details about the upcoming scent are available, Minaj’s sneak peek via Instagram has our imaginations running.
In one photo, Minaj is in her trailer, dressed in an oversized pink ball gown (which looks like a Barbie version of Carrie Bradshaw’s wedding dress) and decked out in lots of diamond jewellery. The only thing that’s as over-the-top as her wardrobe is her facial expression—is she bored, tired or just being dramatic?
The second photo is a close up shot of her intense makeup. We’re talking Ru Paul levels of foundation and contouring, neon eyeshadow and blue contact lenses. The caption—“Fragrance commercial shoot with the legendary David LaChapelle 1st look #dramatic.”—has us eager to see what moods the other looks will take on.
